Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865 — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation — Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people in the state were free. Juneteenth marks that day, and the long arc that turned it from a Texas tradition into a federal holiday.
