Plan a Civil Rights Road Trip Through Alabama

A 4-day itinerary covering Montgomery, Selma, Birmingham, and Tuskegee.

Day 1 — Montgomery

Start at the Rosa Parks Museum on Montgomery Street, then walk to the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church. Afternoon at the Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Stay overnight downtown.

Day 2 — Selma

Drive west on US-80 to Brown Chapel AME. Walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge yourself — it's quiet most weekdays. Visit the Selma Interpretive Center for context, then the National Voting Rights Museum on the south side of the bridge.

Day 3 — Birmingham

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute first thing in the morning. Walk across the street to Kelly Ingram Park to see the statues commemorating the children attacked by Bull Connor's dogs. End at the 16th Street Baptist Church.

Day 4 — Tuskegee

Tuskegee University historic campus, Carver Museum, The Oaks (Booker T. Washington's home), and Moton Field for the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site.
