Open a Black-Owned Salon

Cosmetology license, build-out, and clientele.

Cosmetology license

Each Southern state has its own requirements. Georgia is 1,500 hours of school; Texas is 1,000.

The salon location

Strip mall second-gen salons are 30–50% cheaper than freestanding. Look for sites where a previous salon closed — backwash sinks, plumbing, and ventilation already exist.

Booth rental vs employee model

Booth rental: $150–$400/week per stylist; they bring their own clients. Employee: $25–$45/hour, the salon owns the clients. Trade-offs in control and stability.

Insurance

General liability insurance is non-negotiable. $500–$800/year for a small salon.
