Negotiate Medical Bills

How to reduce hospital bills before they go to collections.

Ask for itemized billing

Always. The first invoice is a summary. The itemized version often catches duplicates and errors.

Ask for financial assistance

Every nonprofit hospital (most major hospitals) is legally required to have a financial-assistance policy. Income at 200% of federal poverty often qualifies for full coverage.

Negotiate a self-pay discount

If you're paying cash, ask for the self-pay rate. Often 30–50% lower than the chargemaster price.

Set up payment plans

Most hospitals will accept $25–$50/month and won't send to collections as long as you're paying.
