A senior Black professional 5–10 years ahead of you. They've already navigated the path you're on; they can spot mistakes you can't yet see.
Where to find them
Professional associations (NSBE, NABA, NABJ, NBMBAA, ABFE). Conferences (AfroTech, BME, BCWN). Industry-specific HBCU alumni networks.
The ask
Don't ask "will you be my mentor" — too vague. Instead: "Could I get 30 minutes of your time to discuss [specific question]?" If that goes well, ask for monthly meetings.
What to bring
Specific questions, not vague career angst. Show that you respect their time.
