Grew up in Tuskegee and Pine Level, Alabama. Already an NAACP secretary by 1943, Parks had organized investigations into the rape of Recy Taylor and other anti-Black violence long before the bus arrest. The boycott that followed launched MLK Jr.'s national profile and overturned bus segregation across Alabama.
