Robert F. Smith
Founder and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, the largest Black-owned private equity firm in the U.S., and the wealthiest Black American.

Robert F. Smith is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm focused exclusively on enterprise software, data, and technology-enabled companies. Founded in 2000, Vista manages over $100 billion in assets, making it one of the largest private equity firms in the world and the largest Black-owned PE firm in the U.S.
Smith built Vista on a thesis that enterprise software businesses, when properly managed and optimized, produce unusually durable returns. The firm takes controlling stakes in software companies and applies a standardized operating playbook — the Vista Consulting Group — to improve performance across its portfolio. That approach has made Vista a consistent top-tier performer and Smith one of the most influential figures in private equity.
Beyond finance, Smith is widely known for his 2019 commencement address at Morehouse College, where he pledged to eliminate the student loan debt of the entire graduating class — roughly $34 million. He is a major philanthropist through the Fund II Foundation, with significant investments in HBCU infrastructure, STEM education, and preserving African American cultural heritage. Smith is also a signatory of the Giving Pledge.
